Traditional Boat Training

You will learn to manage a 30 tonnes vessel and its crew using traditional skills. From river pilotage to gaff sailing in restricted waters, trainees will learn a wealth of management skills and hands-on experience. The syllabus includes aspects of the Day Skipper and Yacht Master theory in relation to weather, tides & currents, how to manoeuvre the barge under sail and engine, lights and rules of the road. Every trainee will also receive an in-dept practice on the barge’s smack gaff rig and on different sail plans. The small boats skills will include rowing & punting the Lynher’s Cornish longboat and our captain’s traditional Wayfarer dinghy.

“Lovely experience on the LYNHER. Learnt a lot about sailing in general with minimal previous experience and lots of knowledge on old boats. Thank you very much! Glad I chose LYNHER, brilliant learning example.” Henry from Plymouth University Marine Science and Engineering Course.

Lynher is available to deliver 3 and 5 days traditional sailing courses on request, please contact the office for details.
